The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has issued a strongly worded statement defending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against what it calls a “deliberate campaign of misinformation” surrounding the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The organization accused unnamed politicians of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democratic processes by sponsoring protests and spreading false allegations about INEC’s conduct. The NDYC emphasized that the recall process is a constitutional right enshrined in Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows constituents to express dissatisfaction with their elected representatives through a legal mechanism.
The youth group specifically warned about intelligence suggesting attempts to mobilize thugs and stage violent demonstrations to create a false narrative against INEC. They called on security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services, to investigate and prevent potential unrest.
The statement condemned what it described as efforts to manipulate public perception and interfere with the electoral commission’s constitutional mandate. The NDYC urged all stakeholders to respect due process and allow INEC to conduct its investigations without intimidation.
The organization maintained that the recall petition was initiated by the senator’s constituents and that INEC, as an independent body, is legally obligated to investigate and verify the authenticity of such petitions.
